GAL has long been committed to promoting elevator passenger safety since it was founded in 1927. However, this focus on safety was dramatically brought to the fore in 1978 when Walter Glaser of GAL Manufacturing designed, patented, and manufactured the industry's first door contact fault monitor. FM1 has since gone on to sell over 10,000 units worldwide and is being used successfully in Relay, PLC Logic, and Solid-State Logic Controllers throughout the industry. This was followed by FMG1, designed to detect unintended car motion and provide protection from ascending/descending over-speed car conditions. Working in tandem with Hollister-Whitney Rope Gripper it offers passengers unprecedented safety and protection.

Concerns over passenger security led GAL to develop RESCUvator for hydraulic elevators. Which in the event of a loss of electricity activates and provides sufficient power to allow passengers to exit safely at the lowest level.

Typically issues such as elevator safety controls rarely elicit much attention beyond industry specialists. However, the potential impact that NYC Building Code modifications could have upon the compliance of over 30,000 city elevators by 2020, has made FM1 and FMG1 a serious topic of interest for elevator consultants, engineers, architects, and building owners citywide.

Elevator professionals know that whatever that affects NYC soon impacts the rest of the world. For this reason, we strongly urge everyone with an interest in the industry to take time to familiarize themselves with recent industry events, consider their potential ramifications, and to review how FM1 and FMG1 can address their current and future needs as well. In the meantime, GAL will continue putting its focus squarely on passenger safety - as we've done from the very beginning.

When used with FMG1, the Hollister-Whitney Rope Gripper®, is a powerful safety measure safely halting unintended car movement and providing overspeed and ascending/descending protection. The Gripper does not damage hoist ropes or cause undue stress to machine or traction sheave.
